Assessments
Skill Placement Starts With a Clear, Calm Assessment
Before joining Splash Co, each swimmer completes an assessment to ensure they start in the correct level and class environment.
Assessments are gentle, guided, and friendly, and help our instructors place swimmers correctly for both confidence and skill development
Why an Assessment Matters
Every swimmer is unique. Assessments are carried out in our indoor heated pool (±32 °C) to maintain comfort and calmness.
An assessment allows us to:
- Evaluate current ability and confidence in the water.
- Determine the correct starting level in our programme.
- Match the swimmer with the most suitable coach and class size.
- Identify any challenges early (e.g. anxiety, breathing, mobility, or sensory sensitivities).
- Establish goals and expectations for progress.
Assessment Options
Standard Assessment (10–15 minutes)
A short, structured, individual in-water session with an instructor.
- Checks for comfort, buoyancy, breathing, kicking, and safe entry.
- Ideal for new swimmers, children moving up a level, or adults unsure where to start.
- Quick and private - parents can observe from the viewing area.
- Fee: included in registration; no extra cost when enrolling.

What We look For
Each assessment reviews fundamental safety and comfort skills appropriate to age and programme:
- Water confidence and ability to relax.
- Breath control (face in water, bubble blowing, exhalation).
- Floating and gliding ability (front and back).
- Kicking technique and propulsion.
- Body position and balance.
- Basic stroke coordination (if applicable).
- Reaction to instruction and confidence away from parent (for young swimmers).
These skills help determine correct placement within:
- Splash Tots - Non-Walking (6–18 months)
- Splash Tots - Walking (18–36 months)
- Learn-to-Swim Levels 1–3
- Stroke Introduction & Development Levels 1–4
- Adult Learn-to-Swim
- Water Aerobics (for suitability check only)
Our Approach
-
No forced underwater submersion.
Children are never pushed under the water; all progress follows trust, readiness, and calm repetition.
-
Confidence before technique.
Comfort and safety always come first; once relaxed, skill development follows naturally.
-
Positive reinforcement.
Instructors focus on encouragement, gentle correction, and enjoyment.
-
Parent involvement.
Parents may observe or participate depending on the swimmer’s age group.
What Happens Next
After your assessment, you’ll receive:
- A verbal overview from the instructor.
- A recommendation for the correct class level and schedule.
- An invitation to enroll or attend your first full lesson.
How to Book
Assessments are offered throughout the week during selected time slots.
Booking ensures instructor availability and the right environment for your swimmer’s comfort.
